CIEM (Cloud Infrastructure Entitlement Management) is the cloud security discipline that asks: Who can access what — and what happens if that identity is compromised?

If CSPM finds misconfigured buckets, CIEM finds the over-privileged role that lets an attacker read them after pivoting from a low-severity entry point. In modern CNAPP platforms, cloud identity entitlement management is not a sidebar — it is a core node type in the attack path graph.

What is CIEM?

CIEM continuously analyzes:

Why identity is half the path

Implementing CIEM without alert overload

  1. Inventory all principals — human and machine
  2. Flag admin-equivalent — map custom policies to effective admin
  3. Cross-reference exposure — admin + internet path = P0
  4. Automate key rotation and removal — unused credentials first
  5. Feed graph — emit identity nodes and ASSUMES / CAN_ACCESS edges

CIEM and compliance

Auditors ask about least privilege. CIEM provides:

  • Tracks remediation of excessive policies
